59 Varieties: Apples to Apples – Sage HRMS Payroll to Sage Abra Suite

Memories of five kids piling into the station wagon with our parents for a trip to the fruit farm make me smile. We’d pick apples and drink fresh cider. I loved the sweet smells and brightly colored fruit. Decades later, looking over the produce section of a grocery store, I’m still amazed at the colors and varieties of apples. Which ones I choose depend on what I’m looking for: apples to eat just as they are, to bake into pies, or to toss in salads.

Comparing Sage HRMS Payroll to Sage Abra Suite is a bit like comparing apples to apples—you have to know what you’re looking for before you make the choice. These two payroll systems have some significant differences.

As part of our “59 Varieties” series exploring differences between Sage HRMS Payroll and Sage Abra Suite, this post takes a look at some you’ll find in the setup.

 

Setup differences

1. Sage HRMS Payroll allows you to use a single earning code that can expense to different General Ledger Account codes with the use of Distribution Codes.

Advantage: While there are a few ways you can accomplish this in Abra Suite, the Distribution Codes in HRMS Payroll makes it easy.

2.  Sage HRMS Payroll provides additional pay frequencies (called “pay periods” in Abra Suite)—Abra Suite has 6, HRMS Payroll has 10.

Advantage: Pay Frequencies can control what earnings are paid and what deductions are taken on specific payroll runs. Additionally, this version supports pay frequencies like these: 13 times a year, Daily, Quarterly, etc.

3. Sage HRMS Payroll lets you set up Workers Compensation Rates per $100 or Rate per hour worked and is calculated each payroll.

Advantage: You no longer have to create your liability at the end of a quarter. Sage HRMS will accrue the liability each payroll.

4. You can create Sales Commission tables and Piece Rate tables in Sage HRMS Payroll.

Advantage: Using Sales Commission tables, you can enter sales figures in time entry and let the system calculate the commission. Many of our clients use the Piece Rate tables for mileage.
