59 Varieties: Differences between Sage HRMS Payroll and Sage Abra Suite

When we tallied the differences addressed in our recent webinar “Sage HRMS Payroll: Exploring the Difference between Sage HRMS Payroll and Abra Suite,” we came up with 59. But just as “57 Varieties” didn’t represent the actual number of products produced by H. J. Heinz’s company in 1892 when he created the slogan, 59 isn’t the definitive number of differences between the two payroll systems either—but it signifies that there are lots of them.

We’ve divided them into categories. Let’s look at a few at the System level.

System level differences

1. HR and Payroll are separate databases in Sage HRMS Payroll.

Advantage: HR no longer has to be out of the system while Payroll is processed.

2. Sage HRMS does not have the Trial Quarter Close and Final Quarter Close that are required in Abra Suite.

Advantage: Once the last payroll for the quarter has been processed in Sage HRMS Payroll, you no longer have any additional steps to take before running payroll in the next quarter. And once reconciliation has been completed, quarterly tax reports can be run and submitted.

3. In Sage HRMS, you can backdate checks.

Advantage: Sometimes you need to issue a check with a date earlier than your last processed payroll. For example, if you have processed payroll and dated checks for Friday the 20th and your group needs to cut a check dated earlier than Friday the 20th, you can do so. In the same situation, if you were using Abra Suite, you could not process a check prior to Friday the 20th.
