2 Types of Learning for Software Implementation
Change is difficult. We’re creatures of habit whether it’s the foods we eat, the clothes we buy, or how we spend our free time. Even if change brings benefits, routine is comfortable and hard to change. I want to read more books, I tell myself. But how often, once home after a long day of work, do I prepare dinner and flop down into a chair, choosing to watch Netflix instead?
Changing software or technology evokes similar reactions. If you’re used to finding your way around one software application, switching to another can make you feel like a beginner. It’s an inconvenience when the change occurs while updating a phone or a personal computer’s operating system. It’s a different story when you are introduced to a new HRMS or payroll software at work.
While you become comfortable with the new technology, business must go on as usual, uninterrupted. Providing quality training for your employees before the implementation is essential to its success.
Different kinds of learning
In the HRZone post “Why learning is like great coffee,” two types of learning are discussed: in-depth training and micro-learning. Both types are helpful in transitioning from old software to new and in addressing ongoing questions that come up while using the software.
- In-depth training is required to familiarize people with the nuts and bolts of the software and how to use it, preparing them for the go-live. This type of learning presents the end user with the big picture as well as detailed instruction on using the new system in the organization’s day-to-day operations. Courses might be presented in a number of modules, each addressing a particular set of features and functionality.
- Micro-learning, on the other hand, is more about providing quick refreshers or tips on using a particular feature in the software. Sometimes, that’s just what’s needed. Even after employees have become comfortable with the software, such small bits of information provide answers when troubleshooting or trying to remember how a seldom used feature works.
Delphia’s Learning Center
Delphia Consulting has developed a Learning Center that offers both types of instruction: In-depth courses and short videos addressing specific functions.
The in-depth courses provide training in some of the Sage products we sell including HRMS Payroll, Sage HRMS HR Actions, My Workforce Analyzer, and more.
The Knowledge Base library is full of short videos recorded by our experts that address common questions or provide insight into less known features of the software.
