59 Varieties: Streamlined Payroll Processing
Do you have recurring payments like cell phone contracts or utilities automatically deducted from your checking account? It’s handy, right? One less thing to remember.
Well, as you know, processing payroll is a complicated business with lots of things to track and remember. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a payroll system that remembers some of them for you? Or could catch mistakes before they turn into problems? Or safeguards the process from random glitches like a power outage that throws your workstation out of whack?
I imagine your answer to all of the above is “Yes!” The good news is that Sage HRMS Payroll addresses those issues and more, streamlining this critical process.
Our “59 Varieties” series explores differences between Sage HRMS Payroll and Sage Abra Suite. This post highlights some advantages of Sage HRMS Payroll processing.
Payroll processing differences
1. If your payroll process is interrupted (e.g., power outage, loss of workstation connectivity, etc.), the system stops processing and gives you a warning. A roll-back feature provides an easy “Restart Maintenance” function that starts your payroll calculations again.
Advantage: In Sage Abra Suite, if payroll is interrupted, errors can occur that may not be evident at the time but may surface later during reconciliation, etc., requiring extra work to find and fix the problem.
2. In Sage HRMS Payroll, single-use timecards allow you to override what is on the employee’s setup for just a single payroll run. For example, if you need to collect an employee’s health insurance contribution because they were out for a month, you can create timecards to deduct this extra amount for only one pay period.
Advantage: You no longer need to remember to go back to fix the deduction amount.
3. Sage HRMS Payroll also provides reusable timecards. They allow you to override what is set up as standard on the employee’s record more than once.
Advantage: For example, if using an internal plan to put an employee on Short Term Disability, you could create timecards you can reuse to pay the employee for 24 per week.
4. In Sage HRMS Payroll, edits in Employee and/or Employer information in payroll history are easy and straightforward. You simply make the entries for the adjustment amount you want.
Advantage: Sage Abra Suite does have the ability to edit payroll history, but it’s cumbersome.
5. Once you have run a payroll, the system has the ability to do exception reporting after the Calculate Payroll process. Sage HRMS Payroll will look at the employees included in that particular run and generate a report of items that could potentially be a problem.
Advantage: You are able to review the report and decide if any of the items are actionable prior to finalizing payroll.
